What Is LAP-BAND Surgery?
LAP-BAND surgery, also known as adjustable gastric banding, is a form of weight loss surgery that utilizes a silicone band or belt. Instead of surgically altering the stomach or bypassing the small intestine, this process restricts the size of the stomach through the use of this device.
Minimally Invasive Surgical Alternative
Gastric banding is a minimally-invasive laparoscopic surgery that is performed via several small incisions, ensuring a faster recovery with a reduced risk of complications. First, the gastric band is placed around the stomach, creating a small upper pouch that holds between 4 and 8 ounces. This band is then attached to the wall of the abdomen via a small port that is not visible from the outside. Once in place, saline is injected through the port to manipulate the size of the band and thus the passageway between the upper and lower portions of the stomach.
After surgery, this system effectively limits the size of the stomach, slowing the passage of food through the digestive tract and making it easier to manage your diet. Minor post-surgical adjustments can be made via the port.
Estimated Weight Loss
LAP-BAND surgery, like other bariatric procedures, is primarily intended to help patients lose weight. However, gastric banding yields the slowest results, leading to steady weight loss over the course of a year or more when diet and exercise guidelines are followed. Average patients can expect to lose 50 percent of their excess weight.
Several factors influence the reduced rate of weight loss in gastric banding. As the digestive tract is not altered, gastric band patients do not experience dumping, or physical symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Additionally, there is no reduction to the hormones that control hunger, limiting the effectiveness of appetite suppression.
Pros and Cons
LAP-BAND surgery has numerous benefits for patients to consider.
- Easily reversible
- No cutting or re-routing of anatomy
- Lowest rate of major short-term complications
- Only procedure approved for patients wit a BMI between 30-35
- Safest procedure for “higher risk” patients
- Avoids malabsorption
- Lower average weight loss than Gastric Sleeve or Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
- Requires frequent adjustments – very labor intensive
- Does not work as well in certain patients (i.e., < 5’2″ middle aged females with a BMI greater than 40)
- Excessive tightness may lead to LAP-Band erosion, slippage or stretching of esophagus which could ultimately lead to removal of the lapband
- Infection may develop around the Lap-Band requiring its removal
