Losing weight is a challenge almost everyone faces at some point in life. For many, diet and exercise can lead to a slimmer figure, but this isn’t possible for everyone. When traditional weight loss options fail to make a difference, weight loss surgery may be the best option for you.
At The Wellborn Clinic, we can guide you through the process of losing weight through medical intervention. Our surgeon is highly experienced in both medical and surgical weight loss procedures, offering you the options necessary to lose weight and live your best life. When you schedule a consultation with our team, we will help you find the right procedure for your body and your lifestyle.
Who is a Candidate?
Despite the popularity of bariatric surgery, it is not a possibility for everyone. In general, patients must meet certain specific criteria to be considered for weight loss surgery or the non-surgical weight loss option of the Orbera Gastric Balloon. Candidates must have:
- A history of diet and exercise without success
- A willingness to make permanent lifestyle changes, including a restricted diet and regular exercise
- A BMI of 40 or higher, or more than 100 lbs of excess weight
- A BMI of 35 to 40 coupled with a weight-related health condition like diabetes or heart disease
- For those with a BMI of 30 or more could be a candidate for the lapband
- For those with a BMI between 28 and 35, the Orbera Gastric Balloon procedure is an option
- Be between age 18 and 65 (Those under age 18 or above age 65 are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.)
Use the BMI calculator to determine if you are an eligible candidate for our weight loss options (Surgical or non-surgical).
Surgical Weight Loss
When diet and exercise aren’t able to help you achieve your weight loss ambitions, weight loss surgery can be an extremely effective way to reduce your appetite and control food intake. At The Wellborn Clinic, we are pleased to offer a wide range of surgical and non-surgical weight loss options to ensure all patients have access to the perfect opportunity.
A bariatric procedure that involves no permanent changes to the body, LAP-BAND surgery utilizes an adjustable silicone belt that that is placed around the stomach. This slows the path of food through the digestive tract, suppressing feelings of hunger. LAP-BAND procedures are easily adjustable and fully reversible.
A more recent surgical option that can stand alone or work in conjunction with a malabsorptive procedure (duodenal switch) is a sleeve gastrectomy, also known as a gastric sleeve procedure. The surgeon removes a part of the stomach to reduce appetite and then cuts away the majority of the stomach, leaving behind a thin sleeve that is roughly the size and shape of a small banana.
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
The oldest and best known procedure, a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a surgical process that reduces the size of the stomach through an adjustment that bypasses the small intestine. Effectively, the stomach is divided to create a small pouch to which a section of the small intestine is reconnected in order to control appetite. Non Surgical Weight Loss Option
For some patients, weight loss surgery is not the right choice. In these cases, a medical alternative that can restrict appetite and promote healthy diet choices can be highly effective.
ORBERA Gastric Balloon
The ORBERA gastric balloon is an adjustable balloon that is inserted into the stomach through the mouth and inflated with saline. This creates a feeling of artificial fullness, making it easier to maintain a healthy diet and restrict food intake. ORBERA is used for approximately six months before being removed. For people who have regained weight or are experiencing complications after any weight loss surgery, Dr. Wellborn may be able to offer surgical or endoscopic revisions in selected patients.
