Weight Loss Surgery Options

Weight loss is rarely easy, especially as metabolism slows with age and for those with health conditions that impede weight loss. For these patients, bariatric surgery can be a necessary step on the road to a healthy weight.

At Wellborn Clinic, we offer three distinct weight loss surgery options to ensure all patients can find the right fit. We realize that not all patients are the same, and it is our goal to work with you to ensure you make the best possible choices, from pre-surgical preparations to long-term recovery. With our help, you can move forward with confidence, partnering with surgeons, counselors, and dietitians who are eager to see you succeed.

Who Is a Candidate?

Despite the popularity of bariatric surgery, it is not a possibility for everyone. In general, patients must meet certain specific criteria to be considered for weight loss surgery. Candidates must have:

  • A BMI of 40 or higher, or more than 100 pounds of excess weight
  • A BMI of 35 to 40 coupled with a weight-related health condition, like diabetes or heart disease
  • A history of diet and exercise without success
  • A willingness to make permanent lifestyle changes, including a restricted diet and regular exercise

Use the BMI Calculator to determine if you are an eligible candidate for weight loss surgery.

Weight Loss Surgery Options

Wellborn Clinic offers three unique weight loss surgery options. Not all procedures are right for all patients, so be sure to review the pros and cons with your doctor prior to making a decision.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

Introduced in the 1960s, gastric bypass is the oldest and most popular form of bariatric procedure. In this surgery, a portion of the small intestine is bypassed and attached to a small pouch created out of the top of the stomach. Gastric bypass procedures are highly effective and result in rapid weight loss in the period following surgery. Learn more about our gastric bypass procedure.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

A sleeve gastrectomy is a simple procedure in which a large portion of the stomach is removed, leaving only a thin sleeve in its place. This procedure can be performed as a stand-alone surgery, but may be used as a primary procedure for extremely obese patients prior to a gastric bypass. Due to the nature of gastric sleeve surgery, this process cannot be reversed.

LAP-BAND Surgery

The easiest and most flexible weight loss surgery option, LAP-BAND surgery is performed laparoscopically and requires no permanent changes to the body. Instead, a silicone belt is placed around the stomach, creating a small upper pouch that food must pass through, thereby slowing digestion. The belt can be adjusted via a port in the patient's abdomen as needed. Learn more about the LAP-BAND Surgery procedure.
